Ian's Diverse musical background includes performances in a range of jazz and 'roots’ bands showcasing a deep knowledge of genres and approaches. He's ' gigged' at 5 star parties, jazz festivals, funky clubs as well as the gamut of bars and pubs in Australia and overseas.
More unusual spots have seen him jamming with a gypsy band in Poland and recent sit in's with Brazilian and US. jazz bands in Shanghai, China.
Early jazz performances in the 80’s included regular gigs with legendary vibes player Alan Lee and one of Melbourne’s premier vocalists, Suzie Dickinson..
Lessons with Sydney guitarist Don Andrews and Degree studies at Melbourne University (previously Melbourne State College) were followed by relocation to London in the mid 90’s— Here, Ian played solo guitar in cafes in the lively Covent Garden area whilst also exploring acid jazz, around the UK, with fusion band `TV eye`.
HIs impressive CV also includes: The Kit Cat club - The Carlton Festa, Bacardi Jazz festival in Sydney, and many dates @ Vic Arts Centre ‘s Not Just jazz. A 6 month residency at Sophies bar, Sofitel, Melbourne came on the tail of an original CD release ‘Grab’.
In recent years gigs have included Saturday nights with smooth front men Gianni Marinucci and Rohan Wallis @ the Kitten Club and regular Sundays at the Botanical Hotel in South Yarra.
A featured sit in with American sax great Eric Marienthal at the Bahn Thai jazz club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia prompted 'Time off' magazine (KL) to request a tour 'promoting Ian's own CD'
His love of the sounds of Brazil saw a new band performing at the Darebin music festival recently. Named “Hot Bossa Combo” the ensemble also featured at the Newport jazz festival in 2024 - Currently performing at corporate events their repertoire include classics from the great Brazilian songbook - see and hear a video (jobim's ‘One note samba’ - in the music section)on this website
As half of the 'Jazz ’n Samba' duo Ian and superlative vocalists (Wendy Ealey and later Debbie La Velle) serenaded Latin music lovers at the Vamos bar in Lt. Bourke st, evenings in 2018 - 2020. Jazz 'n Samba were also seen as a full band, highlighted at the intimate Lido Jazz room in 2021.
Over 2025 Ian freelanced with the popular Jackson combo and reunited with ex Kit cat club bandmates, in a new band called 'Bettina's Martini' - perfomances at The Moldy fig, Lomond hotel, Newport jazz festival and JimmyHornet's bar have been top gigs of 2023.
Some newly recorded solo guitar tracks now appear on this site and suggest a return to smaller and more intimate performances around Melbourne and beyond - hope to see you there!
